100G QSFP28 ZR4 optical transceiver: long distance and small size

QSFP28 ZR4 is the best choice for 100G long-haul DCI(Data Center Interconnect). The transmission distance of 100G QSFP28 ZR4 optical module can reach 80 km by accessing single-mode fiber, with built-in 4-channel cooled EML laser and PIN detector, using 4-way 25G NRZ wavelength division multiplexing technology (LWDM4), the transmission rate can reach 100Gpbs, mainly used in 100G Ethernet, data center, telecom and other scenarios.

In addition to the 100G QSFP28 ZR4 optical transceiver, the 100G ultra-long-haul transmission solution also includes the 100G DCO coherent optical module, which is available in both CFP and CFP2 package types, with the CFP2 DCO offering greater flexibility and supporting higher panel density compared to the CFP DCO.

CFP/CFP2 coherent optical modules use coherent technology, but coherent technology is typically used for long-haul metro optical transmission and is not suitable for use in data centers. Coherent technology uses more advanced modulation techniques such as QPSK, 8QAM or 16QAM, which can double, triple or quadruple the bit rate. However, this modulation requires an advanced technique of coherent detection on the receiver side and DSP to correct for dispersion. While cost per bit remains a concern, component costs are high, and optical modules require space and sufficient power budgets and are only available on CFP and CFP2 pluggable packages. Of course, it is possible to insert coherent modules into switch/router boards for IPoDWDM scenarios. However, the high power consumption and large size of CFP/CFP2 modules require dedicated line cards.

Overcoming the disadvantages of large size and power consumption, the 100G QSFP28 ZR4 optical transceiver is cost-optimized, small in size and low in power consumption to provide point-to-point solutions in data centers without deploying legacy CFP/CFP2 interfaces and capable of operating over point-to-point links up to 80km long without optical amplification and dispersion compensation. In summary, the 100G QSFP28 ZR4 optical module has significant cost and power advantages over coherent optical modules in 100G 80km DCI, so it will be highly preferred for long-haul data center optical interconnects.
