100G Optical Module Types and Main Differences



100G optical module can achieve higher density network deployment, lower power consumption and lower cost. The main types of 100G optical modules are QSFP28, CFP and CXP.

 

1. 100G QSFP28 Optical Transceiver

 

The 100G QSFP28 optical module is the mainstream 100G optical module in the market today, and the package form is QSFP28 (Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable). Because of its advantages of small size, high port density and low power consumption, it is loved by the majority of manufacturers. The transmission wavelength of 100G QSFP28 optical module is 1310nm, and its transmission distance can reach 2km with a single-mode 12 core MTP (MPO) connector. The size of QSFP28 transceiver is smaller than other 100G modules. If you want to deploy high-density and high-speed network, 100G QSFP28 will be a good choice. Plus, it is available in a wide range of types, such as CWDM4, QSFP28 ER4 Lite, QSFP28 PSM4, and QSFP100G-SM-SR.

2. 100G CFP Optical Module Series(CFP/CFP2/CFP4)

 

The CFP MSA is the first industry standard to support 40G and 100G Ethernet optical terminals. The size of CFP is the largest among all the 100G CFP optical modules, the CFP2 is one-half the size of the CFP, and the CFP4 is one-quarter the size of the CFP. It should be reminded that CFP/CFP2/CFP4 optical modules cannot be used interchangeably, but they can be used simultaneously in the same system.

1) CFP optical module is designed based on the interface of SFP optical module. CFP has larger size to support 100 Gbps data transmission. And it can support one 100G signal, one or more 40G signals, OTU4/OTU3 or STM-256/OC-768.

 

2) The 100G CFP2 is commonly used as a 100G Ethernet interconnect link with higher transmission efficiency than CFP optical modules, and its smaller size makes it suitable for higher density cabling.

3) 100G CFP4 optical module has the same transmission rate as CFP/CFP2 optical module, but it consumes less power. Thus, in comparison, CFP4 optical module has an irreplaceable advantage.

 

4) CFP vs QSFP28: CFP4 optical module is the latest generation of 100G optical module in CFP form factor, compared to QSFP28 optical module, even though its width is 1/4 of the size of the first CFP generation , its package form is still larger than QSFP28 transceiver, which indicates that QSFP28 transceiver is better in the utilization of ports. The more widely used CFP optical modules in the market are 100G CFP LR4 10km and 100G CFP2 ER4 40km.

3. CXP Optical Module

 

The transmission rate of CXP optical module is up to 12 × 10Gbps, supporting hot-pluggable. CXP optical module is mainly aimed at the high-speed computer market, which is the supplement of CFP optical module in Ethernet data center. CXP optical module is 45mm long and 27mm wide, and its size is larger than XFP and CFP, so it can provide higher density network interface. In addition, the CXP optical module is specified by the Wireless Broadband Trade Association as a copper connector system. The CXP optical module is currently in less demand in the market.
